After the failed attempt at recreating the interrogation scene from Nightcrawler, my crew and I conducted some more research into film scenes to find another one to recreate. It took a lot of effort as this time we made sure to find a scene that was easily achievable with the resources available to us. More specifically, cast and location. As a crew we ended up deciding on a scene from I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore.
In this scene, Ruth (Melanie Lynskey) and Angie (Lee Eddy) are sitting in the living room of Angie's house, talking about everything Ruth despairs in the world. The scene uses a variety of mid-shots and close-ups and is relatively low lit using tungsten lights, giving the scene a warm, cosy feel. Because the scene is set within a living room, it needs to have this style and feel to convey the relationship between the two characters.
One thing we noticed was how behind each character, in their respective shots, is a lamp. Because the intention of this project is to focus on lighting we need to pay attention to props like this which are used to tell the audience where the light is coming from. Even though this scene would have used artificial lighting, the use of the lamps help trick the audience into being immersed into the scene, thinking that they are actually watching a conversation between two people in a living room.
Now that we had conducted some research into the scene and planned out everything we need, we were ready to head straight into filming.
