We were given a new project today. We have been tasked to recreate an existing dialogue scene, from a film or TV show, with heavy focus on how lighting has been used. Below is the assessment brief:
Shoot a dialogue sequence from a film. This has to take place in an internal location so that the lighting conditions can be controlled.
The sequence must be around 3 minutes (2.40 – 3.20 minutes long)
As a group, you will need to analyse the original sequence shot for shot so that you can recreate it accurately
As an example of a type of scene to try and copy, we were shown a scene from Whiplash.
The scene is shot using a fairly wide angle lens with a relatively wide aperture (around 4.5-5.6) to enable a nice bokeh effect to the background whilst still keeping the characters in focus and allowing movement room from the actor.
After this we watched another scene this time one from The Social Network.

After this research, my crew and I decided on what scene we wanted to recreate. We chose the interrogation scene from Nightcrawler. We chose this scene because it looked relatively simple to recreate with only two characters and a very simple set. We all liked the prospect of recreating the shot made to look as though it is a CCTV camera and the lighting seems achievable.
